It’s common to discover, at some point, that you and the person you’re dating want different things — one of you is looking for something serious, the other something more casual, or the timelines just don’t match. Handling this honestly matters more than avoiding the conversation.
Address It Directly, Earlier Rather Than Later
It’s tempting to avoid the conversation, hoping things will naturally align over time. In practice, addressing a mismatch directly and earlier tends to save both people more time and hurt than letting it play out unaddressed for weeks or months.
Don’t Try to Talk Someone Into Wanting What You Want
If there’s a genuine mismatch in what you’re each looking for, trying to persuade the other person to want what you want rarely produces a stable outcome — even if it works temporarily, the underlying mismatch tends to resurface later.
A Mismatch Isn’t a Referendum on Either Person
Wanting different things doesn’t mean either person is wrong or doing something bad — it just means, at this point in time, you’re looking for different things. Treating it as a values mismatch rather than a personal failing on either side makes the conversation, and the outcome, much easier to handle honestly.
A mismatch identified and addressed honestly early is a far better outcome than a relationship built on an unspoken difference that eventually has to be confronted anyway.
